ProCamera 4.0 for iPhone: It’s our biggest update ever including new Capture Formats & Lightbox!

Update: ProCamera 4.0 has just been featured on the US App Store Photo & Video New and Noteworthy Section!

We’ve just released ProCamera 4.0 on the AppStore. The update is packed with over a dozen new photo, editing, video and sharing features to take your creativity to the next level!

In the spirit of the holiday season we’re dropping the price of ProCamera 4.0 down to $0.99 (a 66% reduction!).

According to Jens Daemgen, our lead developer and creator of ProCamera:

“It’s been four years since we first released ProCamera on the iPhone and this update, in my mind, is the best we’ve ever made.  I’m most excited about the new dedicated ProCamera Lightbox – you can now save, share, export and delete photos and videos right within the app!”

The new ProCamera Lightbox

We’ve built a dedicated Lightbox into ProCamera.  Now you can select, share, export and delete photos within the app! No more app-switching!

To turn on the Lightbox the first time you need to go into the Settings and press on the top-left More button.  This brings up the Use Lightbox Function which you can select and turn to On.

Now ProCamera will save all photos directly to the Lightbox instead of the standard Camera Roll.

Three steps to turn on the Lightbox:

Press the More Button (top-left) to expand out the Settings Press Use Lightbox (top setting) Turn on the Lightbox

The easiest way to access the Lightbox is to use the ProCamera QuickFlick function.  A quick swipe to the right will take you straight to the photos.  You can also open it by pressing PRO>ALBUM & STUDIOS.

To complement the Lightbox, we’ve also rebuilt the Library and Album view to support real-time photo stream updates, copy and paste functionality and full-resolution photo zoom. You can also quickly select, share or export multiple photos at the same time.

New Capture Formats when taking photos!

Our users said they wanted more control over their shooting and we listened.

We’ve added new live Capture formats to give photographers more freedom when composing the shot.  You can now take photos in square (1:1), widescreen (16:9), standard (4:3) and 3:2 formats.

4:3 (Standard)

3:2 (35mm Film)

16:9 (Widescreen)

1:1 (Square)

You can switch between the Capture Formats by pressing on the Options Menu and selecting the different Aspect Ratio (4:3 is shown by default – as shown below).

Powerful Editing Features

We’ve worked hard to give photographers powerful, yet easy to use editing features.

The brand new Tone Curve tool provides accurate, multi-point correction for your photos.  This level of control is often reserved for desktop photo software like Photoshop. RGB and single color channel modes are also available.

We’ve also added new adjustment sliders including Shadow, Highlight, Exposure and RBG Hue control.   You can also either use the sliders individually or drag-them out for multi-slider control. Oh, and there’s also a live Histogram for those who want even more control when editing their pictures!

The new ProLAB sliders work in landscape and portrait mode – just scroll down on the sliders to see them all!

We’ve given our ProFX filters some much needed love, adding a swag of new styles to the Vintage and Special groups.  There are also new grid lines in ProCut to help with more precise photo cropping.

A selection of the new Vintage filters!

Video and Photo at the same time!

With the VideoSnapshot feature you can now snap a photo (2mp) while recording HD video! You never have to miss the perfect moment again. We’ve also added faster video zoom, a video meta-data viewer and Dropbox upload feature!

New Sharing features including SquarePrepare

You can now send your landscape, portrait and square photos straight to Instagram with our SquarePrepare tool.  We realized that a number of our users don’t want to upload only square photos to the app.

With SquarePrepare we’ve solved this issue by giving you a white canvas tool on which you can reposition and resize your photo to suit your needs.  You can now upload landscape and portrait photos with ease.

Usability, Stability and Performance

ProCamera 4.0 has been rebuilt from the ground up resulting in blazing fast performance. Launch times, shooting response and photo saving are all faster than ever before.  The app is also 100% stable.

We’ve also optimized the QuickFlick controls. Now you can flick right to access the Lightbox and Albums and flick left for the Settings.  The Settings have also been simplified for easy access.

*One important note for existing users is that Volume Trigger has been removed from ProCamera 4.0.  This is at Apple’s request.  As an alternative you can use the Full-screen trigger or Smart Trigger (0.5 sec self-timer) to take your shots.

All in all, we’re extremely proud of this release and hope you’ll enjoy using all the new features!

Please let us know what you think about the new version in the comments below.

To celebrate the release of the app and in the spirit of the holiday season we’re dropping the price of ProCamera 4.0 to only $0.99 (down from $2.99).   But hurry, it’s for a limited time only!

We’ve also dropped the price of ProCamera HD for iPad down from $4.99 to only $1.99.  Click here to download.

  1. Pro Photog & pro camera fan says:

Oh no, please say the removal of the volume trigger is only temporary like last time.

I love pro camera app. As a pro photographer it makes my iPhone feel like a point and shoot. But the use of the volume trigger is a big part of this. I’m waiting to upgrade but hopefully you can restore the vol trigger soon b/c the other features look great.

  2. Andy says:

Volume trigger was just brought back! What gives Apple??? That was the best feature on this app

  3. Luca Billeri says:

The best app to take foto, thank you. When it becomes the default application of iOS?

  4. John says:

Now that volume trigger is gone I’ll have to go back to normal photo app since Apple obviously just want this feature on their own software.
Without that this app is basically useless to me. Taking a photo by pushing the screen, come on Apple this is 2012, the buttons are there…

  5. EJ says:

How can I import photos from my camera roll into light box? I can’t seem to be able to do that.

    • ProCamera says:

Hi EJ the Lightbox is designed to store the most recent photos taken with ProCamera which can then be reviewed and exported to the Camera Roll. At present the only way to move photos from the Camera Roll to the Lightbox is as follows:

      1. Turn on Lightbox

      2. Open a photo from the Camera Roll

      3. Open ProLab

      4. Hit Save

This will save a copy of the Camera Roll photo in the Lightbox.

I hope this helps, I’ll also pass on your suggestion for cross album transfer to the developers.

  6. Raquel says:

I just love this app & the upgrades are fab – thank you. For me, sometimes I do like to run my photos through another app to put them into in a frame & label them – seeing you’ve solved my ‘squaring up for Instagram’ issue (which I used to run through another app) maybe you could look at adding a framing/labelling feature to FX in the future.

    • ProCamera says:

Thanks very much for the suggestion @f2319c8cda57e036404b61864fde8051:disqus, I’ll pass it on to the rest of the team. Glad you’re liking the SquarePrepare tool.

  7. Dale2600 says:

After the update I no longer have the blue focus box in expert mode (iPhone 3GS), is this a bug? Focus & exposure control was the main feature that brought me to this app.

  8. Rhom says:

System sounds cannot be deactivated. Slider has no effect.

  9. Elemmaciltur says:

    Seems there’s a bug: I can’t de-activate the system sound.

  10. aaron says:

Is anyone else having a problem with Expert Mode? i’ve turned on Expert Mode, but i can’t seem to be able to get the blue focus circle. regardless if i’m in Expert Mode or not, i just get a yellow exposure circle (which is doing both exposure and focus). When I’m in Expert mode, there’s a lock symbol on top of the yellow exposure. btw, i’m using a 3GS, but i never had this problem before updating to version 4. can anyone help with this bug?

  11. Ching Yeo says:

I love this app, particularly for its ability to separate focus and exposure, and it has become my default camera app on the iPhone. Recently, there have been several occasions where it would crash whenever I tried to take photos with it. If I have my iPod playing, it will crash that as well. I’m running ProCamera 4.0 on an iPhone 4S with iOS 6.0.1.

Another issue is that when I used it to take photos in landscape orientation, ProCamera would save the photos in portrait orientation, and I would have to rotate the photo after shooting.

Have any others experienced this as well?

    • ProCamera says:

Thanks for letting us know about the issue @google-4cf3429b471f8a88a876d4b1aa482593:disqus. If possible, are you able to shoot me an email on and tell me a bit more about when the app is crashing. Does it happen when your doing the same/similar process? I’ll then be able to pass on your info to the support team who return on the 2nd Jan. I’ll also note your photo orientation issue.

  12. DG says:

Once again confused and disappointed that I can’t use the volume buttons to take a shot with this app. I need it when I’m using only one hand. Shape up Apple! Let us use the da*n buttons!

  13. Salomé says:

I love Procamera becouse of the volumen trigger option, I hope you can restore it soon.

  14. Todd Wiseman says:

Improvements look great but the removal of volume trigger is a no go. I know I don’t have the specifics, but I can’t believe Apple is still doing this sort of thing to developers and users. It’s enough to drive one to Samsung… Hope you guys can resolve the conflict soon, I love the app and would really like to keep using it.

  15. Previously Happy says:

So now i can’t navigate to and edit photos in Camera Roll? I’m forced to do it in Lightroom? With Lightroom turned OFF selecting Albums only shows me Lightroom. Why not show All Albums???

    • mishobaranovic says:

Hi @e7949f093cb65285f2cd5870ec0f8352:disqus – that might have to do with either the Location Services or Photos Privacy settings being turned off. Here’s how to access them in iOS6: 1. iPhone Settings> Privacy > Location Services > ProCamera > ON or
      2. iPhone Settings> Privacy > Photos > ProCamera > ON

Let me know if you still have issues.

  16. Yoni Mayeri says:

Hi Misho, I’ve been having problems with the app since the update, using a 4s with v5.1.1. It quits and or freezes while shooting multiple photos. Any advice?

  17. gotham says:

as many (most ?) of your users I’m very disapointed by the volume trigger option removal. In fact if I’ve had seen it before I would’nt have done the upgrade.

  18. al says:

question i have the new ois 7 update and downloaded the pro camera the version the regular not the ois 7, i took a 1 hour video on it and theres no sound coming out of it? why? and i cant upload it to dropbox i dont know why help

  19. jennifer says:

I took a video today and there is no sound. why!!?? such a disappointment. No use having the video if I don’t have the sound. why no sound??

    • ProCamera says:

Hi @disqus_MVIz1NkLhd:disqus – can you check that your have allowed access to the microphone? It’s under the Apple Settings App > Privacy > Microphone > ProCamera ON. Please let me know if that helps.

      • JJB says:

I was / am having the same problem as Jennifer. The microphone was greyed out when I checked (wish I knew this sooner) and I have switched it so it’s green. Hope that solves the problem now. Lost a lot of great videos unfortunately not knowing this.

  20. Neal C says:

Whenever I click ‘save’ after editing a photo the app crashes. So, now I cannot edit photos.

  21. Dissapointed says:

Have to say I took some very important videos of a panel I was hosting – and only WAY later (when I went to upload them) did I realize there is no Volume…. and here I had previously promoted ProCamera to my friends. This really sucks!
